Shanghai, China's largest modern city is one of the four municipalities under the jurisdiction of the Central Government. It is the largest economic and trade centre in the country and a comprehensive industrial base, as well as a famous historical and cultural city. Industry and commerce are flourishing. As a world famous international port, Shanghai is a gateway in East China for the developing tourist trade. Shanghai's history of revolution and culture attract tourists home and abroad. Being regarded as "Paris of China" and as the paradise for shopping, Shanghai has become an ideal city for tourism.

Shanghai is well known both at home and abroad not only for its prosperous metropolitan features and rich humanistic resources but also for a number of tourist attractions with modern flavors that have been developed in recent years. Varied and colorful tourist festivals, like the Shanghai Tourism Festival, the New Year's Eve Longhua Temple Bell Striking and the Longhua Temple Fair are attracting an ever increasing number of domestic and foreign tourists.

Metropolitan Shanghai is China's financial center and is now undergoing one of the fastest economic expansions the world has ever seen. The center of the city is divided into two areas by the Huangpu River. Pudong, to the east, a new business district and classified as a "tariff free zone", is growing rapidly, and is an important special economic zone in China. The level of this new area's industry, commerce, finance, trade, post and telecommunications stands at the forefront in China. More than 130 buildings there, are taller than a hundred mets.

Shanghai is endowed with favorable geographical and natural conditions, and a long history of development. It has a well-developed commodity economy, and has comparatively high scientific and technological levels. As the most prosperous business center in China, Shanghai leads all the others in both the total volume of retail sales and the export value social commodities. In recent years, it has made rapid progress in finance and banking services, and stands next to Beijing, as one of the main financial centers in China.

This amount includes tuition, course materials, certification and moderation fees.  Airfares, food and accommodation are not included.  If you wish to avail the accommodation at the dorm at the university the cost is US$ 300 for the entire duration of the course payable in cash upon arrival. Accommodation details

There are single-bed rooms at the university which consist of a bed, TV, AC, refrigerator, telephone, desk, chair, closet and a balcony. Trainees have the room to himself/herself for the entire length of the course. All the rooms have a bathroom en suite with hot water. A shared kitchen and laundry facilities are provided per floor. It takes 5 minutes to walk to the classroom.

There is a gym, running track, sport courts, swimming pool, ATM machine, fruit stall, bakery, laundry/dry clean shop, supermarket, Internet cafes etc on campus. There are all-together six canteens and a couple restaurants available on campus. Two of the canteens are right next to the TEFL office in Chen Yuan Guest House others are located near the student living area. 3 meals are served a day, however some trainees take care of their own breakfast since they are not used to Chinese breakfast.

If you plan to avail the dormitory-type room provided at the university, you will be required to pay US$ 300 IN CASH upon arrival.

Please email your arriving time at the TEFL office on the proceeding Sunday one week before the course starts. Check-in time is between 12:00pm and 3:00 pm. If you arrive earlier than this time, you may stay in a hotel at your own expenses OR pay US$10 per night in cash upon arrival to stay at school accommodation. Please email two weeks before your starting date to make special arrangements.

 

At 12:00 noon on the Saturday prior to the course start date, we will provide transportation from Suvarnabhumi Airport to your accommodation at the school. If you plan to get a ride at this time, please meet us at 12:00 noon infront of S & P Restaurant, Meeting Point Area, Level 3, Suvarnabhumi Airport. The driver will be holding a “TEFL International” sign. Those arriving at any other time will be responsible for arranging their own transportation. Please review the following recommendations.

Internet Access

Internet access in China is fairly stable and reasonably fast. There are many public Internet cafes on the campus the cost is about $0.40 per hour.

Internet can be arranged in your room by paying $50 in cash upon arrival. To apply for that, we need a copy of your passport to be send a month prior to your starting date. It will be installed within 20 days after registration. We’ll apply to China Telecom for an Internet connection as close as possible to your starting date. However because China Telecom is so busy we can’t guarantee a definite starting date for the connection so it could be a few days before or after.

Directions Going to School

It takes about an hour from Pudong International Airport to the office and half an hour from Hongqiao Airport by taxi.
Our office is on the first floor of College of International Education at Chen Yuan Guesthouse. Please print out the following directions to show a taxi driver:

Charmaine Barretto

Charmaine Barretto has a Masters Degree in Economics and had worked in the Banking and Financial Services Industry for 15 years. She has been extensively involved in Training at the Corporate Level

She has language teaching  experience in English  Language Immersion Programmes .

She has travelled to 26 countries across the globe and enjoys interacting with people from different nationalities. She can converse in four languages besides English and convinced that language is an expression of culture. She sings with a Choral Academy and can play the guitar. She believes that “ A Teacher can influence Eternity” and is firmly committed to imparting knowledge and building skills through this profession.

 

Susan Bai
TEFL International Trainer
She started working as an English teacher in 1999 after graduating from Inner Mongolia Normal University with a teaching certification in English education.

She believes teaching is learning. Her experience of working with students of all ages and levels over the past ten years has not only helped her to constantly refine her teaching skills and techniques but also provided her with wonderful opportunities to learn from all her students. She is very passionate about teaching and is eager to share and learn more insights of this profession with people from around the world.

She enjoys travelling and meeting people. Over the years she’s travelled throughout China and to parts of Southeast Asia. She is always interested in learning about different cultures, foods and customs. She appreciates what life has offered her and thinks that working as a TEFL trainer provides her with great perspectives to better communicate and promote understandings for people from different places and backgrounds.

 

Hyw Davies
Course Moderator
Hyw began teaching English in Hong Kong where he gained a CELTA in 2000. He has since moved to Mainland China where he has been involved in a broad spectrum of TEFL-related activities including curriculum design, IELTS examination and teacher training.

His greatest enjoyment has always come from helping others to achieve their potential.

In his spare time Hyw reads extensively and enjoys travelling to new places and visiting cultural relics, especially old buildings. He believes that there is no problem that does not contain an opportunity, and hopes to grow, both professionally and personally in the years ahead.
